Today I received a call from a very nice sounding fellow who was very articulate, professional and intelligent.
He said that AT&T had sent a notice in the mail to customers in August informing them of an option to select “Consolidated Billing” as the long distance provider, and that if we did not make this selection at this time we would get billed from Worldcom in a separate bill at a higher rate.
He went on to say that if we made the choice to select “Consolidated Billing” as our provider we only see the charges on our AT&T bill and our long distance bill would be reduced to $5 a month – flat rate.
UH OH – it was sounding too good to be true…
I told him I was very skeptical and could he hold on while I pulled up the files.
I felt better that he was still there – but the address he had for account was incorrect – simply because we have the bills forwarded to a completely different billing address. About the time i was putting all my fears in a row he handed me off to a boiler room… in some deep dark overpopulated place with a very hurried woman who had no patience at ALL with my hesitation.
: )
I got pushed back to the nice guy who asked if there was problem – I told him that I was feeling really uncomfortable with the call and the terms and that I really did not want to make any decisions without reading something or calling AT&T to verify what was happening. He gave me a number 800 750 2355 that he said I could call for more information.
I called AT&T as soon as I hung up – they said it is a scam and to watch my bills closely for the next 2 months even if I agreed to nothing.
As always- due diligence wins!
